Kenai Tides 2008                   Kenai Fishing Forum

Are you totally captivated with “Kenai River Salmon Fishing”? Do you head on down to the Mighty River in June and July for the annual “Kenai River Dip Netting” Regatta? Or maybe you’re more into fishing with a rod and reel. What ever your means, you will be needing to know the tides for the particular days you are planning on being on the water. Fishing for the World Class Kenai King Salmon, the delicious Sockeye (Red) Salmon or later for the returning Silvers, it's always wise to know the tides in the mouth of the Kenai to estimate the best timing for good numbers of fresh salmon.

Kenai Tides

Welcome to the 2008 Tide Tables for Kenai River where you will find everything from a Kenai River Fishing Forum to fishing tides for launching your boats at the Kenai City Pier.

Kenai River Tide Tables are represenitive of the daily tides for the mouth of the Kenai River in the town of Kenai Alaska.

Each year, massive numbers of salmon return to the Kenai River during May through October. But during the month of July, it's the return of the Red Salmon that seems to bring the largest number of locals to the mouth of the river, to the beaches, boat launches, RV parks, and gas stations where they purchase ice for the coolers, beer for the belly and fuel for the car, (if there is any room left on the credit cards). Yes sir, it's this period of the year that’s marked by those same activities, conditions, and events that signals our manly little brains to abstain from all acts of intelligence, thoughtfulness or prudence and to just act upon pure animal instincts. It's finally summer again, time for fishing and isn't that what we all live here for?

Kenai River Salmon Fishing!

Due to the low return of Kenai River sockeye salmon that has already shut down commercial fishing in most of Upper Cook Inlet to drift gillnets and beach setnets alike. The Alaska Dept of Fish and Game has issued an emergency order that closed the sport fishery for sockeye salmon in the waters of the Kenai River downstream of the Kenai River sonar counter located at river mile 19 near Soldotna AK. as of midnight July 31st, 2008.

Also noted was regional sport fisheries manager Tom Vania warning that further closures upriver on the Kenai could be coming if the returning sockeye salmon run remains week. The sockeye salmon escapement goal for the Kenai is 750,000 to 950,000 fish by the time the run starts to end in mid-August.
As of Aug. 01st, only 445,926 fish have made it, and even with commercial fishing shut down, far fewer fish then needed are making their way into the river.

NOTE: KENAI RIVER SILVER SALMON:
By Bob Jameson, Kenai Tides Project Manager Aug 02nd 2008

Kenai Tides personal were notified today that the Division of Sport Fish will be sampling coho (silver salmon) caught in the Lower Kenai River starting August 1st and going through September 30th 2008. If your fishing the Lower Kenai River below the Soldotna Bridge, you may be asked by Fish and Game personal for permission to sample any silver salmon catches you have. This sample requires the your permission for ADFG members to examine your salmon for the presence of an adipose fin and to pass a hand-held device over the head of the fish to determine the presence of a coded wire tag. Some silvers will be sampled for scales and genetic tissue. The information will be used to improve management of Kenai River silver salmon run. Please consider allowing these inspections for the benefit of future runs.

NOTICE, THREAT TO ALASKA SALMON FISHING
By Bob Jameson, Kenai Tides Project Manager, Aug 02nd 2008
The largest harvest of sockeye salmon in the world occurs in the Bristol Bay area of southwestern Alaska where each summer, 10 million to more than 30 million sockeye salmon may be caught each year in only a few weeks time. This fishery is being threatened today as Alaska prepares to open Bristol Bay to oil and gas leases and by the massive Pebble Project in the headwaters and spawning streams of the Bristol Bay Watershed. You can help by voting for the Clean Water Act on August 26th to shout your support for the salmon and rainbow trout in these pristine waters.

Where Have All The Salmon Gone?
By Bob Jameson, Kenai Tides Project Manager, July 28th 2008
After the initial surge of sockeye into the Kenai River on July 16th we have seen the fishing slow to a unexpected crawl. Commercial fishing both Cook Inlet drift gill netting and setnet beach sites are not to blame as they're also being affected by the lack of reds in Cook Inlet this year. So what has happened this year to nearly destroy the hopes and dreams of all the Alaskans as well as the tourists visiting this area in search of the prized red salmon that they have become accustom to catching? Is this a sign of things to come?
