Each year, massive numbers of salmon return to the Kenai River during May through October. But during the month of July, it's the return of the Red Salmon that seems to bring the largest number of locals to the mouth of the river, to the beaches, boat launches, RV parks, and gas stations where they purchase ice for the coolers, beer for the belly and fuel for the car, (if there is any room left on the credit cards). Yes sir, it's this period of the year that’s marked by those same activities, conditions, and events that signals our manly little brains to abstain from all acts of intelligence, thoughtfulness or prudence and to just act upon pure animal instincts. It's finally summer again, time for fishing and isn't that what we all live here for? Kenai River Salmon Fishing!Due to the low return of Kenai River sockeye salmon that has already shut down commercial fishing in most of Upper Cook Inlet to drift gillnets and beach setnets alike. The Alaska Dept of Fish and Game has issued an emergency order that closed the sport fishery for sockeye salmon in the waters of the Kenai River downstream of the Kenai River sonar counter located at river mile 19 near Soldotna AK. as of midnight July 31st, 2008. Also noted was regional sport fisheries manager Tom Vania warning that further closures upriver on the Kenai
could be coming if the returning sockeye salmon run remains week. The sockeye salmon escapement goal for the
Kenai is 750,000 to 950,000 fish by the time the run starts to end in mid-August.
